Curriculum, Learning and Teaching

The information in this section is supported by year group long term planning and the individual year group planning/topic webs that are sent out each term. (Curriculum Plans can be found on each Year Groups Page under Learning & Teaching)

The most important thing that parents can do to support their child’s learning is to show interest in what they are learning during a week. It is the best way to bring the curriculum further to life and strengthen the connection between home and school, giving learning even more meaning. 

Questions
Children often claim they have done nothing at school, so how can we reframe the question?
  • What was the best thing that happened at school today?
  • Tell me something that made you laugh today.
  • If I called your teacher tonight what would she tell me about you?
  • Tell me one thing that you learned today.
  • What could you teach me how to do?

Creative Curriculum Planning

At Barton Hill Academy we aim to make learning aspirational, creative and fun- we plan creative learning journeys for our children, based on what we know they need to learn, what is relevant for them, the National Curriculum and some of their own ideas and interests. The process of planning a creative, quality rich learning experience, is consistent throughout the school.

Process for planning

Teachers choose a theme that will best support integrating different types of learning in to a coherent diet of context and skills. This involves planning as a whole school to ensure progression and coverage.


National Curriculum
We have used information in the National Curriculum and are careful to plan a high quality starting point, or foci for the creative learning journey- something real for the children to experience, often a well-planned high quality trip, exploring the local environment and beyond.

The teachers introduce the theme to the children- and get their input to be added to the web diagrams. They decide on what the final experience is going to be for the learning journey (for example- this could be an exhibition, a performance, a trip etc.)

Our curriculum map skills and the National curriculum are used as signposts along the creative learning journey to ensure continuity and progression- we use them in a cross curricular way (so for instance, letter writing might be taught through a project all about Power of reading book being studied).

We look for connections wherever possible between subjects, themes and ideas to help children remember as much as possible. We carefully plot opportunities to integrate technology to transform learning and increase collaboration

Throughout all the learning in the academy we look for opportunities for the pupils to review their own learning, as well as reviewing what they have learnt themselves  Our marking policy is robust and focuses on high quality feedback to pupils as we recognise the impact this makes. 

We are constantly assessing throughout the curriculum, to adapt and innovate to ensure that children can publish and present work effectively.

We use our whole school long term plan and the progress of the children to decide which skills to focus on next term.
