Newsletter No. 1 Spring Term Jan 2014

Free School Meals
Did you know … just registering your child for Free School Meals means that the school gets extra money to spend on pupils? The Government is giving money to schools to help children from lower income families do their very best. This funding is called ‘Pupil Premium’.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
1.First, check if you qualify – it is not just if you are unemployed, so please look at the list below.
2.Registering is really quick and easy – if you think you qualify, contact the school office where someone will help you to register. You can also apply online at www.torbay.gov.uk/freeschoolmeals.
3.If you want your child to have a free, healthy meal at lunchtime that’s great – they will get the free meal (saving you more than £350 a year), and the school receives £900 extra per pupil (rising to £1300 from 1st April).
4.If you don’t want your child to have the school meals they can continue as normal – as long as you qualify and are registered, the school still gets £900 extra.
DO YOU QUALIFY?
You can register your child for Free School Meals if you get any of these benefits:
  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • The Guarantee element of State Pension Credit
  • Child Tax Credit, provided you are not entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual income (as assessed by HM Revenue & Customs) that does not exceed £16,190
  • Working Tax Credit ‘run-on’ – the payment someone may receive for a further four weeks after they stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit
Our Academy also receives additional income if any parents are in the Armed Forces or for looked after children.
Come and talk to us if you’re not sure and register before Wednesday 16th January

School Gateway
To reduce cash being brought into school we have introduced an on-line payment system, known as School Gateway.
Instructions:
2. When you visit the School Gateway website for the first time, please select ‘New User’ and enter your email address and mobile telephone number you have registered with the school.
3. The system will send a PIN code to your phone; please enter this PIN code and your account will be activated for you. As soon as you’ve got the system set-up, you’ll be able to pay money to the school online rather than send cash or cheques.

If you’ve recently changed your email address or mobile telephone number, please let us know so we can update our records.

Win Vanilla Gorilla
Tokens are now being printed in the Herald Express every Thursday until February 26th.
Please collect your tokens and bring them to the reception desk or place them in the post boxes provided around the school.
You can also vote for Barton Hill Academy online

Please ask all your friends and family to vote for our Academy.

Come on Barton Hill Academy - no monkeying around, let’s start collecting!!!

Carol Service
A collection held after the Carol Service raised over £200.00
for the Children’s Society.
Thank you very much for your generosity.
It was a lovely service – thank you to everyone who attended.

Absence Procedure
On the first day of absence the parent/carer should ring the school before 9:00am to inform the office that their child will be away and give a reason for the absence.
An indication of the likely period of absence will be requested.
Admin staff will phone the parents/carer of any pupil whose absence is unexplained and on each consecutive day that the absence remains unexplained.
Attendance letters will be sent to parents whose child’s absence rate falls below 95%.

Parking Sensibly
Some of our neighbours from the Beechfield development have complained that some parents are parking across driveways and making it difficult for residents to leave their homes.
Please park sensibly and courteously with thought for others. We all have to share the roads.

Late Collection of Children
Parents who are late collecting their children on more than one occasion will be charged, as the children will be waiting in the Academy’s After School Club.
If children have not been collected by 4.15pm, Social Services will be contacted.

Pickup Arrangements
Could you please make arrangements with your children before they come to school in the morning, so they are aware how they are getting home at the end of the day.
The office is extremely busy from 2.45pm to 3.15pm.
Messages will only be passed on if it is an emergency.

Life Education Bus
As you may have noticed, we now have the ‘Life Education’ bus in the car park at the front of the Academy.
Children will be having Personal, Social and Health Education lessons in the bus over the next two days.

Head Lice
31st January 2014 is ‘Grand Nit Night’.
If we all, for one night only, have a ‘de-nit’, we can make February at Barton Hill Academy a
nit free zone!
For best results use the ‘nitty gritty’ comb.
Together we can make it work.
For any advice – please contact your local health visitor, local chemist or Maria Evans our school Family Support Worker.

Mealtime Assistant Vacancies
We currently have vacancies for Mealtime Assistants to work in our Academy. The rate of pay is £6.44 per hour for 38 weeks per year (term time only). The hours of work are 12.00 noon to 1.00pm, Monday to Friday.
Duties include undertaking playground duty, supervising and playing with the children, and assisting children in the Canteen.
Please ask at the office for an application form if you would like to apply. Please note, an enhanced CRB check will be required.
Closing date for applications : Friday 31st January 2014.
